Club visit to Kresen Kernow RedruthTuesday 5th November 2024

Cornwall Gold was the meeting point for lunch prior to a visit to the Cornish History Museum, Kresen Kernow, on the 5th November.

Thirty one members enjoyed a hearty lunch up to the usual standard as prepared by the staff at The Cornish Pantry, within the Gold Centre.

The visit to Kresen Kernow was arranged by Tony O'Hanlon. On arrival at the Museum we were greeted by a senior historian who gave a short presentation of the history of the Museum. It was constructed on the site of the former Redruth Brewery and that many of the architectural features of the original building had been retained to add to its character.

She then took members on a conducted tour of the archive department housing many thousands of maps and historical documents from as far back as the 11th century. The whole building containing the manuscripts and papers was air conditioned and controlled to exacting temperatures. A very impressive building built to exacting standards and up to modern technology requirements

The total costs of the Museum amounted to 16 million pounds, 12 Million coming from the EU and a 4 Million contribution from the County Council.

Within the structure was a reference library which seemed to be well supported on the day. There were other sections within the building creating and restoring documents that are of great interest to Cornish historians and scholars alike.

It was an incredible insight to the amazing wealth of history that Cornwall has to offer. Members returned home with an inner glow of respect at what this county has gifted the World over the centuries.
